Celebrating National Small Business Week

Celebrating National Small Business Week

All it takes is a quick search around the internet or a stroll through the decoration section at your local mega-retail store to notice that there is always some reason for celebration.  Holidays or some other event, historical, religious, or just plain wacky, seem to be slated for every day and every week of the year.  While Flexible Work Arrangement Week and National Hug Holiday Week both sound like events I could get into this month, I was particularly interested to learn about National Small Business Week.

Since 1963, National Small Business Week has recognized the contributions of small businesses to the economic well-being of America.  This year, National Small Business Week is May 16-20 and it is set to honor the estimated 27.2 million small businesses across the country.  More than half of all Americans either work for or own a small business and these small companies help to create 60-80 percent of all new jobs in this country.  So while this week doesn’t necessarily receive the recognition (or a cult following quite like National Hot Dog Month) it deserves, small businesses certainly are worthy!

This week’s remaining events can be viewed virtually through the SBA’s free, live webcasting here. And to learn more about this week visit National Small Business Week website directly.

Some national businesses are celebrating themselves this week with many special deals, offers and prizes.  A few of the offerings are listed below:

  • Sam’s Club is offering a 10-week trail membership for only $10.  This is a limited time offer but for more details, click here.
  • Through InDomaining.com one lucky small business owner will win a free professional website.  Enter to win.
  • Duct Tape Marketing is auctioning off an iPad each day of Small Business Week just for following their blogs and trying to match the guest blogger to their post.  Learn more here.

I know I’m personally planning to commemorate this “holiday” as I venture out for a dinner out at my favorite local restaurant!  Happy Small Business Week!
